Elephant Cave

The entrance of the cave (9 meters wide and 6.5 meters high) is 10 meters deep and continues in a tunnel of about 40 meters long.

The rest is 125m long and 25m wide, which is the main hall of the cave.

The depth of the floor in this room ranges from a few centimeters to 4 meters. The roof of the cave is full of reddish stalactites, due to the aluminium and iron content in the cave rocks. In the water, there are many stalagmites.

The most important finding there is the presence of ivory from the Paleolithic age of Elephas chaniensis, and there is a very small percentage of deer bones (Cervidae sp).

Elephant Cave is a diving attraction for the Global Diving Community, worldwide.

General remarks :

The excursion to Drepano area at Chania, starts early in the morning from our base with the minibus. There are stops on the route at various points for sightseeing, landscape photography, as well as for coffee or soft drinks.

We get to the high-speed boat in Chania early in the afternoon, where we start for the cave entry point.

After the end of the dive, we return to Chania for our planned lunch at a traditional tavern.

Following is a walk and a guided tour of the city of Chania, until the afternoon where we begin our return to Heraklion.
